Midtown Yoga is Joining CAMH’s Riseup Challenge 2021

We are excited to announce that this year, Midtown Yoga will be participating in the Sunrise Challenge to support Canadian Association for Mental Health’s innovative mental health research and treatment. The Sunrise Challenge is a one week event where participants are encouraged to rise with the sun every morning and do something positive for their mental health. It will be taking place from May 31st to June 6th, 2021. The good news is you can participate from anywhere- whether you are a member of the studio virtually or you join us for classes in-person! Our fundraising goal is to raise $5000 by the end of the challenge for CAMH.

How can I participate?

You are able to participate in 2 ways: you can join the Midtown Yoga team and complete the sunrise challenge yourself, or make a donation in support of the MYKW team in completing the challenge.

If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can visit the webpage linked above and click “Join Midtown Yoga Kitchener-Waterloo”. Once you are registered with the team, you can collect donations from friends/family that will go towards our team’s fundraising efforts. Then, the week of the challenge you will rise with the sunrise every morning and do something positive for your mental health. You can share your daily “sunrise moment” on Instagram with #CAMHSunriseChallenge and join the thousands of other Canadians joining together to support this great cause!

If you’d like to support by donating to our studio team, you can visit the webpage linked above and click “Donate to Midtown Yoga Kitchener-Waterloo”.

What is the money going towards?

The money raised will support CAMH’s mission to research, develop and implement treatment programs and policies that stop mental illness from becoming fatal. CAMH has focused on several statistics that they want to change:

  • There are 450 million people living with mental illness worldwide
  • 1 in 5 Canadians will experience mental illness in any given year
  • By age 40, 50% of Canadians will have had a mental illness
  • 11 Canadians die by suicide every day and the world loses 800,000 by suicide annually
  • For each person lost, it affects at least 7-10 other people deeply

Why a sunrise challenge?

Waking up early can provide many benefits for your mental health. It gives you a great chance to take some extra time for yourself and incorporate healthy habits to ensure you have a fulfilling and productive day. Your morning routine sets the tone for the whole day. In a world where it is so common to wake up and immediately begin rushing around, taking time for your “sunrise moment” can do wonders for clearing your head and setting you up for success. We cannot control external forces in the world, like traffic on a morning commute- but we can put ourselves in a good mindset in the morning to help regulate our reactions to these things. If you begin your morning by doing something beneficial for your mind and/or body, it will let you begin your day in a peaceful state so you can accomplish anything you set out to do! Let’s use this as an opportunity to do something good for our own mental health while raising money to support those struggling with mental health through CAMH.

If you want to learn more about building a healthy morning routine, keep your eye on the Midtown Yoga blog. We will be posting weekly content leading up to the challenge to inspire you on how to have your best “sunrise moment”!
