Drop what is not Yours!
(a blog post by Bhante Saranapala from March 15, 2017)

Dear Friends,

We have a habit of hanging on to what is really not ours. As a result of that we tend to suffer deeply. What is not ours? Anything we experience through the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and body, that is not ours. However, we have a tendency to personalize these experiences as “I, Me, Mine and Myself.” We make a BIG “I” with all that experience. This “I” has a habit of believing in it as permanent, hence this “I” has the tendency to control everything it experiences. When the “I” loses the control of experience, the “I” gets bruised and suffers deeply. This “I” wants the experience to be there for it unchanged. But, the reality is what we think is ours constantly changes. The “I” wants to control the change by simply begging: “Please don’t change. I want you. Without you, I cannot survive.” Despite the begging, when all experiences change, this “I” suffers big. To understand this, we need to meditate. Without meditation, we can’t understand it. What we need to understand is that all experiences we get through the senses are just there for a split second. Then they cease to exist. Although we think they are ours, they are not really ours. Pleasure, displeasure, anger, hatred, stress, anxiety, depression, pain, fear, envy, jealousy, greed: these are not ours. They are simply based on a particular condition. Observe all experiences with the law of cause and effect. If we can see this truth, then we can drop what is not ours and live a happy and peaceful life!

With many blessings !

Making the world full of light!
A blog post by Bhante Saranapala on January 7, 2017
My dear friends, let us help each other by becoming full of light. Now imagine you and I intentionally become full of light to the world. Imagine you and I choose to become the holders of such a light. Now imagine you are the source of light and I am the source of light. Gently close your eyes and take a deep breath and relax. Now, visualize this: you are light and the whole world is slowing and certainly becoming full of light through yours. I am choosing the way to light. But the real question is: Are you choosing this way to light? If yes, then we can see millions of millions of holders of light around the world. You and I can illuminate the whole world for real. This is a special light that shows the way to love and kindness. This is the light that makes us embrace all sentient beings with love and kindness, the only virtues that can save the humanity, that can let us live in peace and harmony. I am talking about this light because I am concerned about what is happening in the world today. Every person seems to be living a life with lot of fear, anger and hatred. Fear is giving birth to tremendous anger, hate and violence. Like a volcano, people are simmering inside with fear and anger and they are erupting with lava of violence causing a huge disaster and hurting many people. We must understand that fear makes us weak. Fear ruins the life. Now imagine we remove fear from our heart and mind and replace it with light and wisdom! We are going to definitely become happy within. Now imagine we live a life with no fear at all ! Now imagine we walk freely with no fear at all ! We are definitely going to have beautiful world full of light, peace and harmony. If you can visualize this light now, you will indeed see a true heavenly life right in this planet !
With many blessings !

Deepen Your Practice: The Bikram Yoga  Advanced Class with Katie Kitson

Saturday, January 28th 1:30-3:30pm

$25 (+HST)  10% off for Annual Unlimited and Auto pay Members

BUY NOW

Join Katie Kitson as she guides us through the 84 asanas (postures) of the Bikram Yoga Advanced Series.  (In truth, there will not be time, nor will most folks have the ability to do all 84 of the postures, but we will try many of them.)  Stretch your limits (literally) and deepen your practice by putting your body into positions you never imagined possible before!

Katie Kitson is a dancer, a Bikram Yoga teacher and was one of the top Bikram Yoga practitioners in Vancouver, often leading senior teachers and studio owner in practicing the advanced series there.   We are excited to have her teach for the first time at Midtown Yoga KW!  (She will also teach the 4pm and 6pm classes on Friday, January 27th).  She repeatedly competed in the "International Yoga Championship" having consistently placed in the top 3 of competitors in Western Canada.  Click below to see her "performance" at the 2009 International Yoga Competition:
Katie Kitson

Prerequisites for taking the class:
No inhibiting injuries, a good familiarity with the Bikram Yoga practice, and a strong ability and willingness to listen to your body, respect your limitations and sit out certain of the exercises where appropriate to prevent injury. Listening to your body and respecting your limitations will counterbalance any lack of flexibility or strength you may have to do some of the asanas.  (If you are uncertain whether you are "ready" for this class, please talk to David. Otherwise, simply consider the above prerequisites.)

While not essential, IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO DO A BIKRAM CLASS BEFORE HAND so that you start the class limber: eg., the 8am, 10am, or 12pm class on Saturday.

What is the Bikram Yoga Advanced Class?
The Bikram Yoga Advanced Class is  a series of 84 asanas, 26 of which are done in the Bikram Yoga regular practice.  The heat is turned down during this class, the atmosphere is casual, and you may come and go as you need. It is kind of like a yoga "jam session" where you try the postures being demonstrated and practiced by the guiding instructor, and otherwise try to flow along with the movement of the class.  More difficult postures may be workshopped before moving on.

The Advanced practice has been used by participants in the International Yoga Competition ("Yoga competition?", I hear you say--that's another conversation...) to deepen their practice and to give them a repertoire of advanced postures to demonstrate in the competition.  It is also used by teachers to deepen their practices, open their bodies, and expose them to a wider range of seldom-practiced asanas.  Occasionally, such as now, it is offered to the general public.

Description
During this workshop you will be guided by Carina Francioso through a 45 minute yoga class, in a heat-turned down room, followed by a session of expressing your creativity on canvas! Being creative is an essential part of who you already are, therefore NO ARTISTIC BACKGROUND OR PAINTING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. Be prepared to be playful and have fun!

As you move through your yoga practice you will be encouraged to find creative and free flow movements. You will be lead through a series of asanas (postures) that connect to the various Chakras, with a focus on the Svadhisthana Chakra or sacral energy center of the body. This is where your inner creativity will awaken through images, words, feelings, wishes, dreams, goals, desires... Grab a brush and put them to canvas and watch as they manifest into your life!

Things to Ponder:

What would you like to attract for the New Year, or in the next 5 years?
What emotions would you like to feel (happiness, joy, creativity, love, etc.)?
What things would you like to have and enjoy?
What kind of person do you want to become?
Who would you like to attract into your life?

What to Bring:
Yoga mat, your favourite magazines if you'd like to also cut and paste, scissors.
Comfortable clothing you don't mind, perhaps, getting a little paint on.
Food to eat and water to drink: the atmosphere will be casual.
EVERYTHING ELSE WILL BE SUPPLIED: paint, canvas, brushes, etc..

This workshop is an artistic way to manifest your dreams and desires. Come with an open mind and heart. Let's create together!
